Anselm van Rood

I was born in the U.K. in 1941 and grew up in Venezuela and Scotland. I studied art in London in the Sixties, at Chelsea College and the Slade School of Art.

After teaching and exhibiting in the U.K. for several years, I traveled to India in 1978, where I lived and worked for a year. My experiences of yoga, meditation and Eastern philosophy have profoundly influenced my life and my work.

I came to Australia in 1980 and settled in Melbourne in 1992. Most of my recent work is done en plein-air, in direct encounter with the subject. I mostly work in oils and watercolours and drawing is a central part of my practice.

Recent exhibitions include:

  • The ‘Kedumba Drawing Prize’, Kedumba Gallery, N.S.W., 2004 & 2005 & 2007.
  • ‘The Bridge’, a solo, retrospective show at the Smyrnios Gallery in Prahran, Melbourne in 2004.
  • Solo show (with Robert Hannaford & Graeme Galloway) at the Bankart Gallery, Lancefield, VIC, in May 2007.
  • ‘Nothing On‘, a group show of figure drawings and paintings at the Bankart Gallery, Lancefield from October-November 2007

with partner Nicole Ma, Melbourne, 2006
